Barred Spiral Galaxies at Z > 0.7: Nicmos Deep Field Observations
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous optical studies found an unexpected deficit of bars at z > 0.7. To investigate the effects of bandshifting, we have studied the fraction of barred spirals in the NICMOS Deep Field North. At z > 0.7 we find at least four barred spirals, doubling the number previously detected. The number of barred galaxies is small because these (and previous) data lack adequate spatial resolution. A typical 5 kpc bar at z > 0.7 is only marginally detectable for WFPC2 at 0.8μm; the NICMOS data have even lower resolution and can only find the largest bars. The average size of the four bars seen at z > 0.7 is 12 kpc. The fraction of such large bars (4/95) is higher than that seen in nearby spirals (1/44); all known selection effects suggest that the observed fraction is a lower limit. However, important caveats such as small numbers and difficulties in defining comparable samples at high and low redshifts should be noted. We conclude that there is no significant evidence for a decrease in the fraction of barred spirals beyond z∼0.7. The Evolution of Barred Spiral Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Fields North and South
The frequency of barred spiral galaxies as a function of redshift contains important information on the gravitational influence of stellar disks in their dark matter halos and also may distinguish between contemporary theories for the origin of galactic bulges. In this paper we present a new quantitative method for determining the strength of barred spiral structure, and verify its robustness t...
متن کاملGalaxy Morphology in the GTO-NICMOS Northern Hubble Deep Field
Abstract. The increased incidence of morphologically peculiar galaxies at faint magnitudes in the optical could be attributable either to “morphological k-corrections” (the change in appearance when viewing high-z objects at shorter rest-frame wavelengths), or an increase in the incidence of truly irregular systems with redshift. The deep, high-resolution GTO-NICMOS near-IR imaging of a portion...
متن کاملStellar Populations and Galaxy Morphology at High Redshift
In this article we investigate the morphology and stellar populations of high-redshift galaxies through multi-waveband HST imaging and ground-based spatiallyresolved spectroscopy. We study the redshift evolution of galaxy morphology in the Hubble Deep Field, using the deep IDT-NICMOS near-infrared HST imaging coupled with spectroscopic and photometric redshifts. Using the multi-waveband data to...

We have identified six early-type galaxies at z > 2.8 in the central 5.76 arcmin Hubble Ultra Deep Field NICMOS region based on a pronounced broad-band discontinuity between the NICMOS F110W and F160W bandpasses. These galaxies have red observed optical and near-infrared colors (ABF775W−ABF160W ≥ 2) that cannot be explained entirely by dust reddening (indicating advanced age), and their luminos...
متن کاملPhotometry and Photometric Redshifts of Faint Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field
We present a catalog of photometry and photometric redshifts of 335 faint objects in the HDF–S NICMOS field. The analysis is based on (1) infrared images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) using the Near Infrared Camera and MultiObject Spectrograph (NICMOS) with the F110W, F160W, and F222M filters, (2) an optical image obtained with HST using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph...
